No one is considering the times in which the art was written these days. Now Dire Straits, a great rock band from England with a very talented guitar play Mark Knopfler, is under attack just like Mark Twain was a few weeks ago all for the use of a word that reflected the times. Canada has banned the legendary song "Money for Nothing."
The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council has deemed the song "offensive" because the song has what it claims to be a gay slur. Like I said, let's go back before we let big government think for the rest of us and look at the times.
The song was written in the peak years of hair bands. You know the guys who put on make up and sprayed the hair spray and wrote songs like "Talk Dirty to Me" and "Home Sweet Home"--hair bands like Poison, Motley Crue, Warrant, Ratt, and the list goes on. The music was about excess, and hair bands lived like no others in the material world before Guns and Roses came along and decided to kick their butts only to be nearly forgotten about in 1991 when Nirvana hit.
Is the song an attack on homosexuals or is it a reference to hair bands making huge dollars for their simple songs. You know, "Money for Nothing," which even the video suggests. Remember how the song starts?
"I want my MTV..."
The hairbands were cashing in and MTV was a vehicle that drove this wildly popular party rock. Take a look at the lyrics and tell me if you say anything that promotes hate towards the homosexual community.
I want my, I want my M.T.V.
Now look at them yo-yo's, that's the way you do it
You play the guitar on the M.T.V.
That ain't working, that's the way you do it
Money for nothing and your chicks for free
Now that ain't working, that's the way you do it
Let me tell you them guys ain't dumb
Maybe get a blister on your little finger
Baby get a blister on your thumb
We got to install microwave ovens
Custom kitchen deliveries
We got to move these refrigerators
We got to move these colour T.V.'s
The little faggot with the earring and the makeup
Yeah buddy, that's his own hair
That little faggot got his own jet airplane
That little faggot he's a millionaire
We got to install microwave ovens
Custom kitchen deliveries
We got to move these refrigerators
We got to move these colour T.V.'s
We got to install microwave ovens
Custom kitchen deliveries
We got to move these refrigerators
We got to move these colour T.V.'s
Look at that, look at that
I should have learned to play the guitar
I should have learned to play them drums
Look at that mama, she got it sticking in the camera
Man we can have some
And he's up there, what's that? Hawaiian noises?
Banging on the bongos like a chimpanzee
Oh, that ain't working, that's the way you do it
Get your money for nothing get your chicks for free
We got to install microwave ovens
Custom kitchen deliveries
We got to move these refrigerators
We got to move these colour T.V.'s
Listen here
Now that ain't working, that's the way you do it
You play the guitar on the M.T.V.
That ain't working, that's the way you do it
Money for nothing and your chicks for free
Money for nothing and chicks for free
Get your money for nothing, get your chicks for free
Money for nothing, chicks for free
Look at that, look at that
Get your money for nothing, get your chicks for free (I want my, I want my, I want my M.T.V.)
Money for nothing and chicks for free
Easy, easy
That ain't working
Clearly the song was written to describe the times in music and the excesses of hair bands. The reference has nothing to do with homosexuals. It's just another case of political correctness gone too far. Look on the bright side, Mark Knopler, who wrote the song, is now being propped up as the next Mark Twain to attack by the left.
