China's Central Planning Built City No One Moved To (From Phil in Wisconsin)

Central planning is obviously the best way to run an economy. Here is a city that was built in China, because they knew that people would move here. Unfortunately no one came.

From Travel Kat:

Known as the “Empty City”, the Ordos Kangabashi district was designed as a home for more than 1 million Chinese, but remains almost deserted. What makes this even stranger is the fact that we are talking about the second most rich in China.
Again, another poor village located in Inner Mongolia, highlighted with an impressive reservoir of coal and natural gas. The area around Ordos has one-sixth of China’s coal reserves and a third of its natural gas reserves. As expected, the government could not resist the temptation to launch luxury project in this area. It is rare that people are not interested in moving to a place so rich, so luxurious and so many opportunities to invest.
