John Boehner Making More Budget Cut Promises After Failing the First Go Round

John Boehner and many Republicans promised the American people $100 billion in spending cuts. As CPAC began, many Republicans including Boehner and freshman Congressman Billy Long said the $100 billion in spending cuts were a done deal. After they spread their CPAC rhetoric in hopes conservatives would embrace them and their meager cuts, the truth of the matter is they fell way short of reaching the $100 billion in cuts--$39 billion short.

So Boehner is making more promises for more federal spending cuts. Considering his record, I am not confident in his goals, but let's look at them anyway.

From the Politico:

House Republicans plan to pass a two-week stopgap spending bill next week that would keep the government running past March 4 at reduced levels, GOP aides told POLITICO Wednesday.

The measure comes on the heels of last week’s seven-month appropriation bill that would have slashed $61 billion from federal accounts but has no chance of passage in the Senate.

Republican aides say the cuts in the two-week spending bill would be proportional — or pro-rated — to reflect the levels in the first measure. That means cutting about $4 billion over two weeks. The plan is tentative and the contours of the measure are still being crafted.

Because it was too hard to come up with $100 billion in cuts in a $3 trillion plus economy, Boehner is stepping back and promising us $2 billion in cuts each week for two weeks straight. Ah jeez!

Since the excellent commentary on this blog has been critical of Boehner's meager goals, explaining just how small these cuts are, let me do the math for you and explain just how small these budget cuts are.

Boehner's promise $2 billion a week in cuts for two weeks totals 1.65% of Obama's budget per year! In other words this new GOP Congress who appeared so fed up with federal spending is doing little to fill in the dirt at our grave site that has been dug for the past few years.

Come Speaker, grow a pair! You too Billy Long.
