HR1 Amendment 232: Billy Long Not Serious About Cutting Federal Spending and Ending War in Afghanistan

The United States has the best military in the world. We spend 50 cents on every dollar in the world spent for military budgets, yet the United States has no real goals and victory scenario in the war in Afghanistan. All the while as our federal government plays war with no obvious plan for victory, more Americans are coming home in coffins and we continue to quickly accumulate more debt.

I support our military's efforts 100%, but it's becoming more apparent to me, the politicians and the Pentagon think tank are incapable of using the greatest fighting force ever assembled to complete the original mission in Afghanistan, and more young men and women are paying the ultimate cost.

With that said, we got some insight this past week on how serous the Republicans were in cutting federal debt, and the reality is they are not.

Take for instance HR1 Amendment 232 introduced by Jerrold Nadler (D - NY):

An amendment numbered 232 printed in the Congressional Record to limit the use of funds for the United States military operations in Afghanistan to no more than $10,000,000,000.

Now lets put this in perspective to justify my point. As of January 26, 2010, Rueters reported the cost of both wars in Iraq and Afghanistan topped $1 trillion. About a third of that has gone to the war in Afghanistan. Now I want you to think about that for a second as Billy Long and 330 other Congressmen voted against limiting funds in Afghanistan as this country hits the break wall of debt, where we really are at the point of no return.

Why haven't we effectively met our fighting goals based on that astonishing number--over $1 trillion to fight these two wars and no victory? I think Billy Long owes his constituents an answer to that question before these wars get another dime of funding from the taxpayers. But of course, looking at Billy Long's contributors to his Congressional campaign, he was already bought by the industrial military complex, so Long will continue to say he is fed up with wasteful government spending in Washington while continuing to fund costly wars that have cost America way too much.

Of course, while many Southwest Missourians proudly send their sons and daughters to these two hot spots in the world, Long never laced up combat boots and realized the real possibility he could be shipped off some where only to come back in a box. It's time to demand a responsible resolution to these conflicts, as they too are adding too fast to the national debt. If you can't win a war with a trillion dollars, you probably shouldn't be in the business of fighting wars.
