Tom Coburn Crosses a Line on the Second Amendment Even Though His Idea is Good

Tom Coburn wants to use the federal government to ensure mentally ill Americans are refused when they attempt to purchase firearms. Whether or not this would have stopped Jared Loughner is unknown. While I normally celebrate Coburn's wisdom as a conservative, I have real problems with this Republican pushing more gun control. Coburn was on Meet the Press on Sunday saying he was ready to work with Chuck Schumer to begin the process of passing this new gun control.

You see, the Second Amendment says:

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

This means the United States Congress or any law enforcement agency of the federal government doesn't have any right preventing any American from owning a firearm, even though they continue to enact new gun control legislation on the federal level. This really needs to be left up to each state because it is a states' rights issue. Senator Coburn, you of all people should know this despite your good intentions.

My question to Senator Coburn is simply this. Will it be up to the federal government with no Constitutional authority to do so to determine who is mentally ill and who isn't? When the federal government decides once and for all to disarm its people, will they try to make the claim that owning a firearm is a result of some mental illness? Science is easily manipulated by political power.

On another note, Coburn announed with Schumer they will be holding hands during the State of the Union address. I am starting to worry about Corburn's mental state as he appears to be enjoying the company of Schumer these days.

U.S senators Republican Tom Coburn and Democrat Chuck Schumer have stated that they will be breaking tradition and sitting together at President Obama’s State of the Union address, even though they are from different parties.

The two politicians say that they are trying to make a statement that even Republicans and Liberals can come together on certain issues, at least for a night.

The decision which was made by Chuck Schumer from New York who is a Democrat and Tom Coburn from Oklahoma who is a Conservative and suggests that all hope is not lost in Washington, paving the way for cooperation between the two parties, at least in some small way.

See how much love a Republican can get from a Democrat when they start talking like a Democrat!
