The local Tea Parties have been quiet in the hours since most of the Republicans in the House of Representin' decided to vote against freedom and liberty to extend the Patriot Act. I actually have been disappointed by the lack of Tea Party response reprimanding our local Congressman for voting to extend it. Nothing from Tera Sukman's Tea Party Patriot HQ. No statements on the Branson Tea Party Web site. Nothing coming out of Springfield, although Dean Moore who is helping an effort to make the Tea Party an official political party in the state of Missouri for automatic ballot placement did promise he was going to issue a statement about the Republicans betrayal of liberty in their decision to extend this horrible act.
While I have never been much of a fan of Dennis Kucinich, I believe he makes a valid point regarding the Tea Parties and the Patriot Act.
Before going into yesterday's vote, Kucinish stood up for liberty with a challenge to the Tea Party members of Congress.
“The 112th Congress began with a historic reading of the U.S. Constitution,” Kucinich said in a statement. “Will anyone subscribe to the First and Fourth Amendments tomorrow when the PATRIOT Act is up for a vote? I am hopeful that members of the Tea Party who came to Congress to defend the Constitution will join me in challenging the reauthorization.”
Out of the majority of Republicans in Congress, most of them pandering to the Tea Parties at one point last year, only 26 broke ranks with Republican leadership and voted against extending this act, which also attacks the Fifth and Sixth Amendments too. Unfortunately, my Congressman, Billy Long, who is never shy to make the claim he is Tea Party, voted with the Republican leadership and against freedom and liberty.
“Will tea party members defend the Constitution or capitulate on PATRIOT Act extension?” Kucinich’s statement added.
I expected Billy Long to vote with the establishment because I have known for months Long was never committed to the Tea Party. What surprised me was Michele Bachmann choosing to follow Boehner's leadership rather than vote for liberty and freedom by killing the Patriot Act. I am still baffled by her vote.
