One of my favorite books growing up was Where the Red Fern Grows. Set in the Ozarks, its the story of Billy and his two coon dogs Old Dan and Little Ann. Back then they had contests for dogs that caught raccoons, today you get charged with a misdemeanor if your dog does such a thing.
This is what happened to Seth Foster, whose dog Grizz, a blue healer, killed a young pesky raccoon. Two teenage boys caught the dog ending the raccoon's life and of course some animal rights activist ignoring the laws of the jungle couldn't stand what they saw.
Foster is facing a misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty resulting in death, which is punishable by a maximum of 90 days in jail and a $500 fine. A jury trial is scheduled for Feb. 25 in Jackson County District Court.
Foster, whose father owns a nuisance animal control business, contends he did not do anything wrong. The raccoon damaged his family’s property on Ivan Drive in Spring Arbor Township.
“It’s ridiculous,” he said of the charge. “Everybody I’ve talked to says it’s ridiculous.”
Apparently, because the dog was encouraged to catch the coon, which Wilson Rawls writes in his book about dogs catching raccoons, local law enforcement called it cruelty to animals. Chief Assistant Prosecutor Mark Blumer compared it to cock fighting. What a moron! This raccoon was destroying this home owner's property, and once again we see how these animal rights arguments infringe on a property owner's rights to protect their property.
The prosecutor offered Foster a plea bargain and appears insulted Foster maintains his innocence. Why is it in this country anymore we seem to forget the Fifth Amendment and it's almost like you are guilty and have to prove your innocences these days?
Get this, the boys filming the video were also charged. They had to appear in front of a juvenile court. Good grief!
