I know for a fact Billy Long doesn't like the free flow of information on the Internet. In fact he detested it so much, he has a history of failed attempts to ruffle bloggers feathers going as far as trumping up charges to get the FBI involved. Yet nothing has come from any of his claims. So perhaps it's no surprise Billy Long is starting to sound like Barack Obama when it comes to the Internet.
First of all, it seems Billy Long has taken a liking to a Northeastern gun grabbing Republican known as Peter King. King is proposing many radical ideas like more gun control after the Gabrielle Giffords shooting, more power power for the Department of Homeland Security (If You See Something Say Something Act of 2011, and now more federal control over the Internet. All of these ideas give the government more unconstitutional power while also growing the size of government, and for some reason Billy Long's name is showing up as the co-sponsor for many of the bills this not so conservative Republican named King sponsors.
The latest that has my concerns is HR607. Now it's no secret Obama wants more control of the Internet. He is pushing for an Internet kill switch. Check out what HR607 creates besides more government. HR607 facilitates development of a wireless public safety broadband network. What that means right now is still unknown, but it does sound like it could intermingle with Obama and the federal government's desire for more federal power over the Internet. Remember the Internet kill switch is being promoted as a tool for public safety and national security as well.
From TMC News: Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., has introduced legislation (H.R. 607) to "enhance public safety by making more spectrum available to public safety agencies, to facilitate the development of a wireless public safety broadband network, to provide standards for the spectrum needs of public safety agencies." The bill was introduced on Feb. 10 and has six co-sponsors. Co-sponsors include Reps. Bennie G. Thompson, D-Miss., Mike Rogers, R-Ala., Yvette D. Clarke, D-N.Y., Candice S. Miller, R-Mich., Billy Long, R-Mo., and Michael G. Grimm, R-N.Y.
Like I said, the details just being released don't give much insight, but one has to wonder if we have a reason to be nervous. After all it's hard not to think Internet kill switch when you start thinking about this, and I am not the only one who read this today and connected it to the obvious plan in the federal government. After all this is the same Peter King who sponsored the "If You See Something Say Something Act of 2011" which expands the Department of Homeland Security, and Long's name showed up as a co-sponsor as well.
